What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

The label on my Century Centurion motor is missing vital information. There is a part number but there are no CAT, HP or SF numbers. The part number is 7-193631-24. I found a matching motor using the 6 digit number in the middle. Does that mean it is an exact match or does the HP and SF still need to be identified?
(the numbers were not obliterated in any way, they were not on the label to begin with)
Thanks

Hi, Yes, this motor can be used as a replacement for the motor you have with p/n 7-193631-24.

I have a Century Centurion (AO Smith) 7-164302-24 3/4 hp pool pump motor, serial number BW8-07, and I need bearings and shaft seal. Do you have those?
Reply
Hi Chandra, The 7-164302-23 motor uses the 203 Bearing (62032RS) one on either end. The shaft seals are specific to the pump housing, so we will need to know the model of that part.

Hi, Ralph. The 304 Bearing is the bearing that is used on the shaft end and 203 Bearing on the opposite shaft end.

Will this pump replace my current pump?
See attached picture...
Also, I reached inside the filter basket to see if the impeller felt okay. I can move the impeller with my fingers and it seemed to wiggle around a bit. Is that normal or could I have an issue with the entire pump not just the motor?
This B127 is the drop-in replacement for your current B127. As for the impeller, there is not much I can tell from that description. The best way to figure out of a part in the pump is broken, is to open it up and inspect it.

I am looking to replace a B127 (part# 0-164302-24) motor type CX frame S56J. Do I need to short out the capacitors to remove the electrical wires?

Hi, Mike. You do not need to short out the capacitor when replacing the complete motor.

I am looking to replace my B127 (part# 0-164302-24) motor type CX frame S56J. I understand from your video on removing motors it said to short the capacitor because it can hold a charge after you kill power to it from the breaker box.
I asked one of your techs about this and he said I don't have to do that if you replace the whole motor.
Is this still true?
I've attached a photo of my current motor. It has a cover plate on the back to access the leads.
Hi, Mike. Due to the design of the B127 motor, you do not need to discharge the capacitor.

Replacing a B127 (part# 0-164302-24) motor type CX frame S56J. Your video on replacing pool motors says to short the capacitor. Tech (Lennox) says not to worry about it.
Just curious as to why you don't have to discharge the capacitor. Is it strictly for this motor?
Apologies if overkill but I just trying to cover all my bases. Thanks!

Does this motor only have 1 capacitor? Or is there a separate start capacitor also?

Hi, Dave. This motor only has a Run Capacitor - 628318-307.

I replaced my old motor with a new on of these. It hums and then kicks on after about 5 seconds. COuld it be the capacitor already since its brand new?
Reply
Yes that could be a sign of a failing start capacitor and you may also may want to double check that the shaft seal has been installed correctly. Here is our testing a capacitor guide.

I just purchased this pump and I found that the old impeller is somewhat rusted. Should I replace the impeller or would a go kit work and should I replace all the gaskets/seals?

What would be a larger motor I could upgrade to from this one?
Reply
Hello Kevin. The Century Motors B127 has a total horsepower (THP) rating of 1.125. The Century 1.0 HP Round Flange 56J Full Rate EE Motor - B128 has a rated THP of 1.4. The Century 1.5 HP Round Flange 56J Up Rate Motor - B229SE has a rated THP of 1.5. Transitioning to a motor with greater THP will not increase water circulation if that is the objective. An upgrade in impeller size in conjunction with the larger motor would accomplish that objective. Transitioning to a larger motor utilizing the current impeller will cause a reduction in the operating stress on the motor.

Hi Andy and thank you for reaching out to us. This Century 1.0 HP Round Flange 56J Up Rate Motor - UST1102 is identical to what your pump had when it left the factory. We do not have a tune-up kit available for your pump, so we would recommend replacing the motor shaft seal and the seal plate gasket when you replace the motor.Be sure to check out our guides on How To Replace a Pool Motor Shaft Seal and How To Replace the Motor on Your Pool Pump for some helpful tips.
