What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
Reply
Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

You would need to replace the Diffuser Assy. 3/4 - 2 1/2 Hp (072927), Impeller 3/4 Hp Full 1 Hp Up (073127), you can reuse the same Set Screw (071652) and get a Pentair/Purex Whisperflo Tune Up Kit (GOKIT32) to use with the 3/4 HP Standard-Full Rate Motor.

On the recommended moter from INYOPOOLS is 6.6 13.2. Is this a concern? I just want to make sure I get the same HP and the correct motor. The motor I have lasted 16 years.

Hi Scott, The B847 will be the correct replacement motor. The amps is not a big concern other than it will cost you less to operate this motor. We recommend changing the shaft seal and o-rings when replacing the motor. If you can provide the manufacture and model of your pump housing, we can locate the correct parts for you.

Hi Ying the proper replacement for your motor would be this B2853 Pool Motor or if you want to go with an ultra energy efficient motor which will cost about 70% less to operate than you could go with this Variable Speed Replacement Motor
Reply
The existing one to be replaced is 3/4 HP, and the one you recommend B2853 is 1 HP, will it be compatible?
Reply
Hi Ying, Yes they are the same True HP as your 3/4 HP is a full rate motor which is equivalent to a 1 HP up rate motor since the full rate motor has a higher service factor. This is easiest explained through showing the math... below is the comparison of a 1 HP Up Rate Motor Vs. a 3/4 HP Full Rate Motor.1 HP Up Rate Motor - 1 HP x 1.25 Service Factor (SF) = 1.25 True HP (THP) 3/4 HP Full Rate Motor - 3/4 HP x 1.65 Service Factor (SF) = 1.24 True HP (THP)

Other than the seal kit what is needed when the motor is replaced? I just added a new sand filter about three months ago now no suction and using a lot of amperage.
Hello. Typically a motor replacement would only require a seal kit to complete the project. Your information indicates a high amperage draw on the motor. Does the amperage reading exceed the motor label specifications per the voltage connected? If the amperage is higher than the maximum limit check the voltage at the motor power terminals. If the voltage is low, the amperage draw will be increased to compensate for the low voltage. Check for obstructions in the motor such as a worm impeller rubbing against the diffuser or debris wedged in between the impeller and the diffuser.

Is this motor a match for the motor I have?
Does Pentair make their own motors?
Does a 3/4 hp motor come in a variable speed? If so do I need to make adjustments (electrical and otherwise) to accommodate the variable speed?
The motor specs for my Pentair Superflo pump are as follows:
Pentair 3/4 hp
SF HP .94
Motor # 196237
Model # SF-N 1-3/4A/340037
3450 RPM SF 1.27
Thanks!

Hello. The Century Motors 3/4 HP Full Rate Motor B2847V1 is a compatible replacement for motor #196237. In most cases, Pentair-labeled motors are manufactured by A. O. Smith/Century Motors. Currently, there are no 3/4 HP variable speed motors available by any manufacturer (residential pool pump application). The Century Motors V-Green 1.65 HP Motor model ECM16SQU is a compatible variable speed motor. ECM16SQU It is recommended that the motor shaft seal, seal plate gasket, and diffuser o-ring be replaced concurrent with the new motor. The GOKIT78 contains the necessary parts to complete this project. GOKIT78

Hello Eric, this will depend on the motor model/part number that you have. Here is our "How To Choose The Right Replacement Pool Pump Motor" guide that we put together that should assist you with locating that.

I have an old (~1995) Whisper Flo 3/4 HP, Y56Y, watts 208-230/115, 3450 RPM, SF 6.0-5.6/11 (part# 8-177120-02). It has been a great pump. It still works, but the motor just got extremely loud and sounds like it is going to die soon. The impeller is not blocked and moves freely.
Is it a good idea to replace the motor, or should I replace the entire pump? Is it pretty straight forward to replace the motor and what motor and go-kit do I need?
Thanks,
John Haley

Hello John, most often this is a sign that the motor is failing. The direct single-speed replacement motor is the 5321-0. The seal kit for a chlorine swimming pool is the GOKIT32 and for a saltwater swimming pool, it is the GOKIT32SALT.
