Which side goes where when I replace this 201 shaft seal?
Reply
When replacing this 201 shaft seal as well as others you need to put the spring side on or against the impeller with the dark ceramic side out and then the other half of the seal inside the pump seal plate with the white ceramic side facing out. Please be advised not to touch, wet, or dirty any of the ceramic parts for it very well may compromise the seal.

I bought this along with a motor. I have setup watching your diff videos. It is a JWPA Sta-Rite pump. After hooking everything up and turning it on, there is water coming from the backside of the impeller so the seal is failing. I did have a VERY hard time getting the seal onto the impeller and I'm not sure the spring is actually able to move properly. Should I lubricate the impeller to help slide on the seal, and if so, with what (not the seal itself, but the impeller to help slide on).
Reply
Brian, Lubricating the shaft/inside of the impeller with a silicone lubricant where the shaft seal goes will make it easier to install the seal. You may need to install a new shaft seal since its leaking.

I never replce a pool pump motor. This was very easy to replace the seal. 4 screws pump comes out. Allen wrench a 22mm to losen the bolt on the shaft. Use a screwdriver to take the seal out press the new one in. Put it back. Done. 30 min job at most.

(4 out of 5 stars) Affordable Sealing Solution
Reviewed By: Eric B. from Hamilton, MS ()
Pros: Affordability
Cons: Rotating Element Material
This mechanical seal is not bad for the price, but working in the pump and valve industry myself, i would recomend a better face material for the rotating element other than the phenolic face, such as tungtson carbide. The staionary element (ceramic) is fine, as long as you do not experience extreme temperature changes, this will result in cracking the seal face.

(5 out of 5 stars) Replacing seals is a NO-BRAINER
Reviewed By: John M. from Rosemount, MN ()
I am a penny pincher, I could not find a better price than right here at inyopools.com I am very happy I replaced the seals while I had the motor apart. I didn't realize how badly work my old seals were until I had new ones to compare with. I also replaced the impeller which I think really helped circulation. I had more water pressure with a new, lower HP motor, than with the old higher HP motor probably partly due to the new impeller.

I tried order this part from another supplier only to find I was shipped the wrong part. INYO pictures of the part online helped insure that I got the correct part this time. A possible Tip page would help to show the most likely cause of these type of slow leaks and some diagrams explaing the deassembley of the motor pump units.
