What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Is this motor self priming?

Hello, The motor itself is not self-priming. This is an in-ground pool pump motor. The "self-priming" term refers to the pump as a whole as in ground pumps are designed to sit above the water level.

I have an AO SMITH Max-E-Glas II motorP4EA6G-152L (230A, 2HP, Single phase, CCWPE rotationl, 3450 RPM)
How does the impeller come off - pressed, threaded (LH or RH), etc.? I read the how to of holding the rear of the shaft to keep it from turning which makes me think it is threaded on, but I wanted to ask.
Also, do you have a distributor I can pick this motor up from in Dallas, Texas?
Thanks, Charles
Reply
Charles- The Max-E-Glas II has an impeller screw that has to be taken out, then you would have to unscrew the impeller, which you would have to rotate Counter Clockwise. We do not have any distributors, we are an online only retailer.

Do you offer/supply/recommend an outdoor timer that can be used to only run pump motors for certain times of day or certain periods of time? I understand you should only run the pump an hour for every 10 degrees above zero during peak periods or full time in freezing weather. Can you shed any light on this?
Thanks for the opportunity to ask questions.

Question on a 56Y Square Flange 2 HP B855 Up-Rated A O Smith, 10A 230V
When replacing the motor I have a Black and a Red wire coming from the breaker at 230 volts and of course the green ground. The motor has the following terminals "B", "L1", "L2" which is already internally white wired, and "A" My question is does the black wire go to L1 and the red wire go to the terminal marked "A". I know where the green ground goes.
Thanks,
Doc
Reply
Hi Doc, When wiring the motor for 230 volts, the "black" wire would go "L1" and the "red" on "L2" or vice versa. Confirm that the motor is set for 230 volts. You can also watch our How To Wire A Pool Pump Video.

I have this motor but the start capacitor is in the base and not under an external hump. I replaced the capacitor about 6 months ago and it is starting to go bad again. The 220-250 volt cap @161-193 uF won't fit in the base. I installed the 115-125v before with the same uF rating. Is the 115-125v sufficient enough for this motor or is this why the cap went prematurely?

The diameter of the motor is wider on the 56 frame then the 48. This would mean that the 48 may not rest on the base/stand if there is currently one. You would need to locate a 56 frame version or adjust accordingly with a base/stand.

Just bought our house need to buy motor/rebuild kit. Current motor is usq1152 & pump is AR207-L. Question - What seal kit/motor to buy? The 1152 is 1 1/2hp but the pump housing AR207 means 2hp motor, I think. We have the original build sheet and that says they had a 1hp motor installed when new. 1152 is alittle over 10yrs old. Pool has Polaris 5 port caretaker system and is around 25K gallons. Have no problem putting another 1152 on but wondering if I should upgrade to 2hp motor.
Reply
It'll depend on what you have for features, such as a waterfall or suction cleaner and what your filter size is if it'll be able to handle a 2HP motor. The replacement for a 1-1/2HP would be part number SQ1152 and the shaft seal is part number 5056-08. If you want to send me the above information along with the distance in feet from where your pump is to your main drain I can advise you in if you could go with a 2HP motor instead of a 1-1/2HP.

John,You will want to replace your motor with the same one that is currently on your pump. In your case, the part # 165200-06 cross references to a 1,5 full rated motor (B842), but the total horse power on the motor is 2.21. (To calculate your total horse power, you will multiply your horse power rating by your Service factor (SF). Hope this helps.

I purchased this motor to replace the one that runs my pool fountains. Everything fires right up and I can hear the motor running but nothing is coming out of the fountains. I've also replaced the impeller and all seals. When I look at the counter clockwise rotation of the impeller I feel that it may be backwards. Could that be the case and is there a way to reverse it on this motor?

Hi, Cory. If the motor is rotating counterclockwise from the impeller side, that is correct. Check out Inyo's How To Determine Why a Pool Pump Won't Prime, and How To Prime a Pool Pump guides to troubleshoot this issue.

Also I bought a gasket kit for you. I thought it had the square gasket thought goes on square pump motor side but it does not. My old 2hp century did not have a gasket so it one necessary here?

Hi, Jim. The wiring you suggested will work since the motor is only capable of being wired for 230 volts. As for the gasket, if one was not included in the kit, its not required for your model pump.

This is a 2hp motor from what you currently have, but we would not be able to calculate and confirm if your system is compatible to double in strength. If you are already working with a pool contractor then we would advise to confirm all of your pool and system variables to make sure it can handle that increase.

No special supplies are needed to unbolt the motor. We do always suggest a Seal Kit when replacing a motor. To determine the proper seal kit we will need to know your pump make and model information, common pump names would be Pentair Whisperflo, Pentair Challenger, Jandy Stealth, etc.. To supply this information click the reply link below, also if you could send a few photos those are always helpful as well. If you send photos then take a close up shot of the motor label as well as a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get any of this information we can make the proper recommendation.

This a Pentair / Pac Fab Challenger pump they have two series, the CHII or the CFII. The shaft seals only vary for salt or chlorine pool, the O-rings/gaskets will be determined based on which series you own. The Pump Shaft Seal 5/8" - PSR-200 is for chlorine and the PS-3867 is the Pump Shaft Seal Heavy Duty (Saltwater Pools). You will need to remove the impeller and check for a molded part number on the front or back of it. This will help us confirm which series pump it is to suggest the correct o-rings or seal kit.

Thank you. On the impeller I see 35-5085 and 35-5086.
Will this motor replace what I currently have?
Hi Daniel, yes, this is a correct single replacement motor for the motor included in your photo however the direct replacement is the B859. You will also need a Pentair Challenger Seal Kit when you replace your motor. We put together this Video on How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor which you may find helpful when you tackle this project.

what is the difference between the USQ1202 and the US1202?
Reply
Hello Yakoob, there is no US1202 but there is an SQ1202. The USQ1202 is an uprated model and the SQ1202 is the full rated model. The SQ1202 is actually stronger. Here is a guide that we put together called "How To Understand True Pump Horsepower - Up Rated vs Full Rated" that will better explain this.

Will this motor work with a pentair whisper flow pump dated 8/2009? Will the old impeller work okay, and do you sell it fitted with a new impeller? What seal kit do I need? Please include pricing and shipping information. Needed quickly if this is the right motor. The system has a 48 sq ft DE filter and 1.5 inch piping except 2 inches at the pump. Do you recommend anything different? Pentair thinks the USQ 1202 is probably a good choice, I think they said "uprated". Please advise
Hi Jim, You will actually need the B859 2 HP Up Rated Whisperflo Replacement Motor for the motor included in your photo. You will also need a Pentair Whisperflo Seal Kit when you replace your motor. We would suggest replacing your impeller with this 2 HP UpRate Whisperflo Impeller we do not sell this pre-fitted to the motor but the replacement process is very easy. Estimated delivery is 3-5 business days after purchase, we will email over a quote with pricing and you can place an order directly through the emailed quote. Hello, I currently have a Jandy Pump PlusHP with the HSQ220 Motor, 2.2HP. Will this work? If so, do I need any o-rings or gaskets? Thank you.
Yes, this is the correct replacement motor for the motor included in your photo. Could you supply the serial # off of the plastic pump housing of your Jandy Pump PlusHP as this will determine the seal you rquire. The serial # would be in this format P08FF0001 or if you know if the pump is from before or after 2005. Simply click reply to post any additional photos or answers.

Unfortunately for your pump there is not a kit and parts are purchased individually. However the motor, shaft seal and back plate o-ring would be the standard items you would want to replace.

Ok. Can you provide which motor shaft seal it will need? Thanks.

Hello, My pump began making metallic noise, reduced flow and shuts itself off (I assume overheating). I can turn it back on, but after awhile it shuts off again. I think I need a new pump. I have used info from your site in the past to do other repairs, so I think I'll give this a try as well, but I want to make sure to use the correct replacement so that it mounts up correctly and I don't make my job tougher than it needs to be. - Peter
Hello. The metallic noise the pump is exhibiting is a bit of a mystery until you take it apart. The motor turning off while in use is typically a sign of overheating and should be replaced. The Century Motor USQ1202 is the direct replacement for your current motor. The GOKIT78 contains the motor shaft seal, gaskets, and o-rings required to complete the project. The metallic noise could be the result of an out-of-balance impeller in which case the impeller should be replaced. If that is true, the correct impeller would be part number 5002-05DA. My pool motor has begun making a squealing sound and hot to touch. It comes on and functions but I know something is wrong. I currently have a 1hp motor. Would there be any benefit in upgrading to 2hp on this page? Here is my current pump 1HP Square Flange Motor EB853
I typically do not recommend increasing the HP of your pump. You will need to change out some of your internal pump parts (like the impeller). Also your filter is rated for your pool pump. So it might not be able to handle the new GPM of your pump. So you would most likely need to swap that out too.

Can you recommend a replacement pump or should I go with the sane model that’s currently in place?

It will be hard to recommend a pump based on the blank label on your pump. I would also need the GPM rating on your filter. The replacement motor for your 1HP EB853 is...Century 1.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Up Rate Motor - B2853

Can a 56Y Flange motor be replaced by 48Y Flange motor? I bought 48Y instead of 56Y and am wondering if this will create any problems. Thanks
Reply
Hello LFM. A 56Y frame motor and a 48Y frame motor differ in motor diameter and overall length. The 56y frame having a larger diameter motor and a shorter overall length. Both motors have the exact same square flange dimensions and bolt to a pump's strainer housing, mounting bracket, or seal plate in the exact same locations. If your pump has a motor support bracket you will find that the back end of the 48Y frame does not rest on the bracket. The 48Y frame motor typically comes with a rubber spacer that can be fitted to the support bracket to provide support to the motor. There is no difference in the performance of a 48Y vs 56Y providing the other motor specifications are identical.

I have a SQ1202 and just recently it's started to make a very loud grinding noise. It's so loud it's turn off. What should I do?
Reply
Hello Manny. In most cases, a loud motor is the result of motor bearing failure. The Century Motor model USQ1202 requires one each of these bearings, Bearing, 203 (Single) - 62032RS and Bearing, 204 Ntn 6204-ll (6204-2rs). Attached please find 2 videos that you may find helpful. I have the Century 48Y 2 HP motor installed. It’s about 2.5 years old. It flows and sounds fine (not bearings) but overheated today and shut down. It restarted fine after cooling down but seems to be running very hot. What should I check? Capacitors? What’s the best way to do that? Thanks.
Hello David. Attached please find a brief tutorial addressing conditions that may exist causing the pool pump motor to overheat. Other considerations: be certain the wet end of the pump is fully primed - the motor is also cooled by the transfer of heat from the motor down the motor shaft to the water in the wet end. Be certain the valves on the suction and pressure sides of the pump are in the correct position to allow maximum water flow. Be certain the pool filter is clean and not restricting water flow (check filter pressure). The motor's thermal overload switch is malfunctioning (doesn't appear likely in this case). The attached photo is the model century motor I have for my pool. It’s in dire need of replacement because it’s begun making the loud grinding noise due to bad bearings (the existing model is from 2003). Will the square flange model I’m looking at purchasing work for my unit? Or will I require something else
Hello Christopher. The Century Motors 1.5 HP 56Y Full Rate EE Motor model B2842 more closely resembles your existing motor model 7-177451-03. The Century Motors 2.0 HP 48Y Up Rate Motor model USQ1202 is compatible with total horsepower but differs in motor dimensions 48Y vs 56Y. The square flange of both motors has identical dimensions but the motor barrels are not the same. The 48Y is smaller in diameter but longer in length. If there are space restrictions or if there is a rear motor support, the B2842 will fit the stand exactly as the old motor does.

Would this be a replacement for my pump?
Thank you for contacting Inyo Pools. The USQ1202 would be a perfect replacement for your K48A76A04 motor as long as you have 220 volts running to it. Otherwise, you will need to replace it with the identical but dual voltage (110 and 220 volt) SPX2715Z1ME. The mfg recommends replacing at least your shaft seal whenever you replace your motor to prevent your motor from being damaged by water. If you provide the make and model of your pump, I can suggest the correct tune up kit for your pump.

I know this is the right pump, but was it set to 115v or 230v? Can’t figure out the switch.
Hello Jason. Based on the photo provided, your current motor appears to be an A. O. Smith Motor model USQ1202. The voltage range for this motor is 208-230VAC, identified on the motor label. There is no 115VAC option. The operating AMPS - 10.4 would have a secondary listing if the motor had another voltage option (115VAC). There is no such listing. The replacement Century Motors 2.0 HP Up Rate Motor model USQ1202 operates at 230VAC only. Incoming power voltage can be clearly identified with the use of a Multimeter.

Hi I purchased and installed this pump.
It says 2 HP, 10.4 amps, 230 V. But then it says 1.47 kwh.
I'm trying to figure out energy usage. Is it actually 1.47 kwh? Because most 2 HP motors are closer to 2.5. 10.4 amps and 230 volts would be around 2.39, no?
Reply
Hello Matthew. Using the formula I (current in amps) = P (power in watts) / E (voltage), the Century Motors 2.0 HP motor model USQ1202 at 230V, 10.4 amps would have a Power rating of 2392 watts, 2.392 kW. To calculate the cost per kW-hr; Watts / 1000 X daily usage (motor on time in hours) X cost per kWh (from your electricity provider).
